Academic Progress of children

By Sangeeta | Project leader

Ensuring access to formal education among children of migrant tribal community in Raigad district of Maharashtra

The Muktashala a facility for tribals is ensures equitable access to formal elementary education for children between 6 to 14 years from migrant tribal families in the intervention area. It aims at minimizing dropout rate among children of migrant parents by providing a safe place for the child to live while their parents migrate. It also intends to ensure holistic development of the child by encouraging participation in various activities with special focus on health and nutrition.

Here are the highlights of the progress among children in the last academic year:

Academic improvement among children between 2nd and 10th std in 2017-18 year

There has been significant improvement among enrolled children after they were supported with after and before school academic support in Muktashala. 1.80 % children obtained A2 grade (score 81% -90% marks), 31.60 % children obtained B1 grade (score 71% -80% marks) and 38.60 % children obtained B2 with (score 61% -70% marks) and 10.53 children obtained C1 grade (score 51% to 60% marks). There has been a significant change in academic results among 50% of children. For these children it’s a great achievement since its far ahead than the national average of dropout rate which is 50% among tribal students in the 1st to 10th standard.

Reading improvement with understanding

A recent asessment of reading ability with understanding among 16 children in 1st to 4th standard in comparison to baseline RIP (Reading Improvement Program) assessment shows the following:

  • Story: As compared to baseline, there were no students who was able to read story and understand the stories. But after RIP intervention, there was a significant improvement witnessed among children and 56.26% children are able to read and understand stories now.
  • Sentence: As compared to baseline, there were no students who was able to read the sentence but after RIP programme, 81.5 % children are able to read sentences.
  • Word: At the time of baseline 75% children could read “Words” and in end line 100% children were able to read words.
