The vision of Compel2Excel is to match local churches, businesses, or community stakeholders with schools who are serving elementary students in Tarrant County. First and second graders are paired with a trained and caring adult reading coach as they receive support to increase their reading skills.
We are the most affluent and technologically advanced of all the industrial nations on earth. Rudolf Flesch wrote in a letter to his daughter in 1955, after teaching his grandson to read: "Since I started to work with Johnny, what I found is absolutely fantastic. The teaching of reading in all the schools and textbooks is totally wrong and flies in the face of all logic and common sense. Johnny couldn't read until half a year ago for the simple reason that nobody ever showed him how.
Volunteers will go into the schools to work one on one with the students who are having difficulties with reading. Each volunteer with work 30 minutes a week with each child. Having one on one individualized help will allow the volunteer to focus on the child's individual needs and access a reading plan according to his learning abilities.
Each student will begin reading on grade level or above.
