Our Garden Is Expanding: Starting With A Borehole

By Mathew Towers | Communications Intern

Borehole Progress
Borehole Progress

You may have heard that we are drilling a borehole. A borehole is a narrow shaft drilled deep in the ground to extract liquids or gasses; it is a grant from LUSH Cosmetics that makes this project possible. Ugandan company Busoga Trust is on site at the Birth House right now, tirelessly drilling by hand every day. They are currently an impressive 70 feet deep and have already hit water. The project will be completed by the end of this month, and we are very excited to show you the finished product.

This borehole is monumental for Shanti. According to water.org 24 million people in Uganda currently lack access to clean water; many of these people are mothers and children. Our new borehole is a reliable way to access safe water for our staff and maternal health programs. Mothers, staff, and workshop attendees will have access to more clean water than ever before, allowing Shanti to provide an even better standard of care. Our rain water collection system will remain in place, providing excess water for our gardens as well as washing and cleaning.

Our community garden has also been a huge success with our expert agriculturalist Kato at the helm. The herb garden provides herbs and spices for nutritional and medical needs, and we currently have crops of cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, bananas, and more. We are also excited to announce that the community garden is expanding on to our newly acquired land. The increased crop yield will allow us to improve our nutritional education classes through the use of experiential education. Shanti will be able to accommodate more people than ever, allowing them to learn by doing. We are very excited to provide this increased opportunity to our Ugandan beneficiaries.

As always webale, thank you for reading, and we hope you will continue to follow along with our Borehole and Community Garden projects.
