This garden was created for people with disabilities showing an interest in growing their own vegetables as part of a food security initiative, JOB-ABLED establishes an unique inclusive community project involving one interested community member and one learner/Youth to plant vegetables on land made available, teaching them a life skill that can be used in everyday life. We want to expand this garden giving more people the opportunity to feed their families with fresh vegetables.
South Africans live with a food crisis daily. One of the key interventions and a long-term solution to the hunger and malnutrition faced by millions of South Africans is to develop a culture of sustainable food gardens in various sites such as schools. People with disabilities also need security and work opportunities after they leave the school.
Improving food availability can be achieved through capacitating small-scale people with disabilities and influencing city and settlement design to give people greater access to arable land, equipment and infrastructural resources, and assist with setting up small gardens in the community. Creating job opportunities for disabled bodies.
To plant more community vegetable gardens at schools around the country giving more households the access to fresh vegetables.
