Introduction
The final quarter of 2024 marked significant progress and achievements in the gardening initiatives at Alta du Toit School. With the collaboration of schoolchildren, staff, and external contributors, we advanced both educational and practical goals, fostering a sense of teamwork, responsibility, and sustainability among all participants. Below is a detailed summary of activities and outcomes.
Key Highlights
Student Engagement and Practical Learning
Alta du Toit School Students: Students actively participated in setting up the school’s first compost heap, an initiative made possible through their observation of a wood chipper in operation. Special acknowledgment went to youth, who exemplified leadership and inspired their peers by taking the initiative in this project. Their efforts have begun to yield tangible rewards, including a bumper harvest of green beans. Preparations are already underway for the 2025 planting season.
AfriTraining Learners: The school hosted three students—Esethu, Athenkosi, and Zukhanye—from AfriTraining as part of their 12-month learnership in Plant Production, which will conclude in April 2025. These learners have made notable contributions to the garden, applying their training to enhance productivity and sustainability.
Teacher-Led Initiatives
Classroom Vegetable Garden: A Teacher Assistant has taken responsibility for guiding a group of students in managing their class vegetable garden. Despite its modest size, his patient and dedicated mentorship has greatly benefited the students, encouraging hands-on learning and care for their plants.
Expert Input and Support
Organic Gardening Guidance: Gobiofarming] provided valuable advice on organic pest control and fertilization, further advancing the commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
Inclusive Gardening Efforts: A new gardening area designed for wheelchair-bound students was identified and trialed successfully, ensuring accessibility and inclusion in gardening activities for all students.
Leadership and Teamwork
The garden team played a pivotal role in leading the garden initiatives. Their expertise, dedication, and willingness to share knowledge have been instrumental in the success of these projects.
