Disaster response and recovery in Nepal

By Matt Kertman | Senior Communications Associate

Flooding destroyed Nepalese homes and livelihoods.
Flooding destroyed Nepalese homes and livelihoods.

Since a series of earthquakes devastated the country in 2015, Nepal has endured one hardship after another.

In a country where a full quarter of its people lives on less than fifty cents a day, and frequent natural disasters result in high food prices, loss of life, and a crumbling infrastructure, just five percent of all houses damaged by the earthquakes have been rebuilt  and 800,000 families remain vulnerable.

Last week, monsoon rains deluged the country, flooding rural areas and inundating communities under feet of water, muck, and mud.

In fact, seasonal monsoon storms have had deadly consequences for much of South Asia, affecting 24 million people in countries throughout the region.

Tens of thousands have been displaced, with an estimated 800 dead.

In Nepal, families are struggling to rebuild their homes and businesses. Officials are concerned about food shortages and disease caused by polluted water.

BRAC is working with the government and local organizations to assess the damage and develop a needs-based response. We want to help families recover their livelihoods. We also want to rebuild schools and local health clinics.

Please stand with the affected families and donate to support BRAC’s disaster response and recovery work in Nepal.
