Summary

Mental health challenges in rural Uganda often go untreated because of stigma, poverty, and a severe shortage of trained professionals. This project will provide 2000 people annually with community-based counseling, peer support groups, school mental health education, and referrals for vulnerable children, youth, women, and families. By training local volunteers and strengthening community awareness, we will improve access to affordable mental health services, reduce stigma, prevent crises.

Challenge

Almost one in every four Ugandans lives with depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, and other mental health conditions without receiving care. Rural Health facilities are few, trained professionals are scarce, and stigma prevents many from seeking support. Poverty, domestic violence, and unemployment worsen emotional distress. Untreated mental health conditions lead to school dropout, family conflict, poor livelihoods, and preventable suffering across vulnerable communities every day.

Solution

This project will bring mental health services closer to over 2000 people annually by training volunteers, teachers, and peer counselors to identify and support people in need. We will provide confidential counseling, support groups, school programs, community education, and referrals to health facilities when specialized care is required. Mobile outreach services will reach remote villages, helping reduce stigma while improving access to timely and compassionate mental health care.

Long-Term Impact

The project will create lasting community systems that continue providing mental health support to 1000s of people long after the initial funding ends. Trained volunteers, teachers, and local leaders will promote awareness, reduce stigma, and identify people needing help early. Strong referral networks and community ownership will improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen families, keep more children in school, and build healthier, more resilient rural communities across Uganda.
