Ensure the sustainability of clean water in Haiti

by International Action
Vetted

Summary

Thanks to donations from people like you, many Haitians have access to clean, safe water. BUT FOR HOW LONG? We want to go one step further and ensure this water supply is sustainable. At the moment, the communities rely on the delivery of chlorine from International Action. With your help, we will train elected community leaders to manage the water chlorination independently, providing a sense of ownership and pride that spreads far beyond the water they drink.

Challenge

Since it's foundation, International Action has worked with Haitian communities to install chlorinators -a simple device which ensure chlorine is fed into the water supply at a constant rate, killing cholera and other water-bourne diseases.Currently, these communities rely on the delivery of chlorine and while they are grateful for the availability of clean water, they want to be in charge of their own future and self-sustaining for future generations to come.

Solution

We aim to train elected community members to manage the water supply. By charging a pay per use fee for the water, these water committees can raise funds to buy chlorine tablets themselves, with money left over for any maintenance issues and a small salary for those operating the water supply. By taking on responsibility for the water supply, communities will become empowered so they no longer have to rely on aid but can count on a sustainable source of clean water for their children.

Long-Term Impact

This project is aimed at long-term sustainability. Haitian communities want to be in charge of their own destiny, as they have seen many NGOs leave Haiti as the donations from the earthquake-relief funds have been spent. Together with the Haitian communities, we want to build on the success of the chlorinators by ensuring their sustainability. Empowering these communities will give a sense of ownership and pride, which spreads much further than the water they drink.
