Approximately 98% of the population of Totonicapán is of Maya Quiche ethnicity.  The 48 Cantones is an 800 year-old coalition of community leaders from the region and local EcoLogic partner.  Together, we have worked to document the extensive oral history of the Maya Quiche people which focuses on the interrelationship between people and nature. EcoLogic has helped transcribe the history into books, radio programs, and a documentary film.

Through dissemination of the history we have helped re-energize younger generations to take a more active role in preserving the forest. Working with local schools, EcoLogic has held reforestation workshops for youth and help construct 7 state-of-the-art greenhouses with modern irrigation systems, run by community members.

Working with the 48 Cantones, EcoLogic hopes to preserve the Totonicapán Forest while helping transfer traditional knowledge regarding environmental stewardship to younger generations.
