By Kaganga John | Executive Director

Build School for 300 Students inKasejjere Village Kikandwa Subcounty Mityana –Uganda

KEA is journey underway of fulfilling its plans to build four classrooms block and teachers’ offices to provide a favorable learning environment for 300 vulnerable students  in Kasejjere Village

John Kaganga

The school term started in February 2018 when the pupils and teachers reported back ready for the year 2018. The school program is going on well and the pupils have started well with most of them reporting after the December-January holiday.  As earlier mentioned, 22 candidates did their final exams in November last year 2017, and all of them were admitted to secondary schools in February 2018.  Although the performance was not very good, they all managed to go to secondary schools.  We are happy that some of them were lucky to get scholarships from different well-wishers, government and now already in school; we have managed to give annual scholarships to the most vulnerable children in the community.  Together with our partners through GlobalGiving (www.globalgiving.org) ,We have also managed to support feeding program in the school and we remain optimistic that we will get enough funds to continue supporting this noble initiative.

We have also re-established school garden project to produce some vegetables to supplement the nutrition, it is very wet at the moment, and we hope the weather will continue to support the school farms from March, April to May.  The pupils prepared the garden for planting.  We hope they will manage to do some crop watering as they are planning to do so if rains fail.  The pupils are very determined and we wish them all the best, our feeding program in Green hill primary school, has been very successful initiative which attracted many children in the school and maintained them there thus benefiting with the education.

We are also happy to report that construction is going on well and will be benefit to children and community.  Our effort if finish up the Construction this year, the classroom to be ready for use.  The classroom construction is funded by individual through a GlobalGiving platform and we take this opportunity to express our gratitude to everybody who has contributed towards the success of the community.  With the contribution received though GlobalGiving community, we have been able to support the construction and we will continue supporting the work, as we continue fundraising. We remain optimistic that we will have enough funds to continue supporting the work. We thank all the well-wishers for their kind support and I encourage them to consider supporting finishing of the block. We invite all well-wishers to consider supporting this noble project to improve conducive learning environment for the pupils.  We are happy that the community is seriously considering educating girl child after a long campaign.  The school now has many girls unlike there before where only few girls used to go to school.  We continue encouraging the parents to continue with the same spirit and more so encourage those who are still not into educating girl child.

Thank you again for those who have supported this project and welcome many more to join hands towards this project. We are happy to inform our partners that admission more new students in this year which is a very positive move. The school had improved in appearance after construction began of new classrooms and also the number of students has increased therefore giving the community much hope.

The well near the school has been very effective and especially during the dry periods, it has been very effective to the school and the neighboring communities and this has also contributed to the success of the school The school population has increased this year and the earlier plan of building more temporally classrooms and providing desks is still very ideal. The school management decided to construct a temporary classroom in January this year after school enrolled more pupils. They are organizing for a fundraising to source funds for putting up more classrooms.

Scholarship program.

We have just concluded conducting monitoring and evaluation on our school project and we are happy to report that these projects are promising. We made follow up on performances of the scholarship beneficiaries and the progress to this far is good. We have realized that these beneficiaries are doing will in their class work and the absenteeism has really reduced unlike before when we had so many beneficiaries missing school. The teachers were really pushing us to increase the number of beneficiaries but due to limited resources at the moment we cannot increase the number. At the moment we are organizing a visit with our partner in June where they will visit the beneficiary’s homes and have a session with them and their parents. These visits are important as we shall be able to discuss the challenges facing these families as well as encouraging parents to ensure that they provide learning materials and uniforms to their children once they receive scholarship money

Challenges

Progressing on well with challenges here and there but the community is coping with them since they don’t have much to do.  School management is trying its best to support the pupils in one way or the other and one positive change made is to keep pupils in school most of the time.

It has been discovered that absenteeism in school has really reduced and parents are encouraging their children to be in school during school days.  It has also been noted that scholarship beneficiaries have improved in their performances and this has been taken seriously by the well-wishers and they are very happy and willing to continue providing scholarships to these needy children and their parents there is need for more support.

Plan

There is also a plan to add more story gardens in the school as it has proved to do well and help the community to learn more and gain skills on more vegetables production.  Once they have reliable source of water they will add more to create room for communities to continue learning and also to supply them with vegetables to improve their diets and selling surplus if any to other members of the community to meet their other basic needs.

Thank you again for all those who are kindly contributing their resources to support these needy children and the community. Thank you all for the continued support.

Through this project we hope that classrooms will be constructed to ensure all the pupils are in a good learning environment.  Pupils and community could not believe their eyes after reporting back to school after January as construction is going on the construction of the classrooms is still going on and they will also benefit from roof water harvesting for clean water access which will provide clean drinking water for the school community and the neighboring community.

Temporary buildings

The project has benefited pupils in a great way, they no longer have lessons under the trees, but they sit comfortably in their classrooms. We habilitated 7 classrooms in total. From the last We believe education is the key to success, and we look forward to ensure the school has required facilities, like classrooms, teachers office, library and store office in collaboration with our donors. We are hoping to get more funds to finish the constructed block and buy more desks for the pupils. It is our hope that we shall finish the construction in 2018, and embark on other activities within the school in 2019.  Building of classrooms for learners will not only increase enrollment and retention of the learners in school but also increase their chances to join secondary education like their counterparts in other regions and possibly access tertiary education. With this prospect the learners are therefore poised to make significant changes in the social status and the community in general.

We thank our donors for their kind support.
