Access to Free Community Healthcare in Africa

The community we work with in South Africa really did fall through the cracks when it came to government support. They have no services whatsoever in the township apart from a primary school. No doctors, no police, no emergency services and the township is so overcrowded that the sewers are backed up, people live on top of each other and so when a fire breaks out it takes away at least 30 families at time and leaves them homeless and with nothing.

And you thought life was tough? Still every day as I walk around our community I see a smile of faces and the support from each other is so overwhelming, I know if we had the money we could change our community for the better together and without any other assistance and this is why I know how important Action Change is and you as the donors as it is your money that allow me to work for change in our community.

While this is a new project we didn't expect to raise $3,000 in days and we know it takes time as we don't have any big donors just our amazingly generous and supportive individuals around the world, like you. We have raised over $300 so far and rather than sit on these funds we have teamed up with a local supporter to run free eye testing for children in the community, they have funding from another project and with our little bit we can officially open and start our healthcare project.

We are so excited and will share with you an update soon but we hope this will help us kick start our healthcare project and one day we will have a clinic funded and providing free health care to people living in poverty.

Thank You

Introduction

With a high number of the population living in poverty, there are few who have access to proper healthcare. Government funding is minimal and public healthcare facilities are understaffed and under-resourced, making it nearly impossible for many to access healthcare. South Africa also has a high burden of disease with Tuberculosis, HIV and Aids being prevalent in the country and without adequate testing centres people are often unaware and spread the disease tenfold.

Report

In the last quarter we have managed to secured a local doctor and partnership with a local NGO that promotes vision and eye testing for children in townships. We now need a nurse and funds to revamp a space at the local school to run as a clinic. We also want to include specialized education and mental health services but we need help to raise the funds for this.

Introduction

South Africa is facing a number of major issues when it comes to the healthcare system, and for a country with high rates of disease, this is not something they can afford to deal with. A lack of funding and pervasive poverty is keeping a high number of the population in ill health and with thousands dying due to a lack of testing centres, treatment facilities and inefficient infrastructure. Our local school is aiming to tackle these issues by becoming a hub for healthcare in the community

Report

Our aim to set up our local school as a community health centre to test people for disease, provide emergency and everyday healthcare responses to people in need as well as provide workshops and classes to the local community members. Workshops will include topics such as HIV/Aids and how to minimise the spread and protect yourself, COVID safety workshops etc. Local testing and treatment centres will also create jobs as we provide training to community members. $20 provides a community nurse to a community for a morning
