By Shivnath Karmakar | Programme Manager- Community Health Programme
Community Health Programme of Sabuj Sangha in remote and deep Sunderbans continued to reach out the unreached communities, struggling for basic amenity access and better living, through health camps & services rendered at Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) located in remote village Nandakumarpur under Mathurapur II administrative block.
Various establishments of the organisation across the remote Sunderbans and the robust team of the Community Health Programme also remained catalyst in extending health services to the vastly spread remote areas.
Without the capacity, both financially and by remoteness, to access basic health facilities the people of deep Sunderbans villages were in habits to avail unscientific and unhygienic remedial methods- like going to the local quacks or to avail magical practices through exorcisers etc.
With the Community Health Services of Sabuj Sangha reaching at their vicinity they are now relieved of their pains compelled to tolerate since ages.
Thus, communities from remote Sunderbans who earlier remained deprived of the basic health facilities now are attuned with the continued health services by the band of robust trained medical professional under Sabuj Sangha’s Community Health Programme including Experienced Doctors, Nurses, Pathologists, Community Health Workers etc.

Case Story
Menaka* Mondal pregnant at 18 years lives at remote Herambagopalpur village under Patharpratima administrative block in South 24 Parganas district with her husband Dipendu* and other family members. The only occupation of the family is Fishery. Married at only 17 years (below the govt. prescribed age) Menaka* was ailing by malnutrition. Identified on her 16th week of pregnancy she was advised to consult Doctor at the outreach camp organized by Sabuj Sangha. At the first detection she was found malnourished. As recorded by our Community Health Worker during the first intervention at her house the hemoglobin level was 9.8 gm/dl, height 138 cms and weight 33 Kgs. Thus she was found to be at ‘High Risk Pregnancy’ with very poor health condition.
At our consistent mobilization she started visiting our outreach health camp at Purbasurendranagar village at close proximity of her house. As advised by the Doctor she was taken under observation and started taking medicines. Later she also got registered herself in the Community Health Insurance Scheme of Sabuj Sangha.
Now with consistent follow ups by our Health Worker, Doctor’s Consultation and free medications she is in a much better health now.
Now, Menaka* is in much better health than before. With the regular check-ups at the camps and consultations at the mothers’ meetings under Safe Motherhood Mission of Sabuj Sangha her hemoglobin level increased to 10 gm/dl now. She has gone through U.S.G screening at the Rural Hospital of Sabuj Sangha ‘Swarnalata Sabuj Seva Sadan’. Dipendu*- Her husband is very happy and expressed his gratitude to Sabuj Sangha for their support. They haven’t decided yet on selection of Health Institute for safe delivery. Yet, they are determined to go for Institutional Delivery.
