Haiti is one of the Caribbean countries with the weakest medical care system. Divided into 10 departments, its population is estimated at more than 10 million people. Due to the lack of a viable medical system, less than 0.5% of the population have a health insurance coverage. This health's problem increases a high rate of morbidity and mortality in the country. This project consists in implementing a massive medical insurance program in the remote areas benefiting the underserved population.
As an organization working in the medical sector and its determinants, we have been appealed by the WHO declaration on universal health coverage, which reinforces the need to double up health coverage by 2030. Haiti's health coverage system is extremely poor compared to its neighbors in the region. Facing to this reality, it is pressing to act promptly in order to reduce the country's morbidity and mortality rates by 2030 for a safer future.
Given this situation, LIGHT is committed to working in line with the WHO goal of covering as many people as possible by 2030. The project will have an impact on all ten departments of Haiti by establishing the basic health insurance plan integrated in different clinics of the organization. The organization will ensure that 1,000 people are enrolled in the insurance program by department each year until 2030. The plan is designed to provide basic medical coverage with various free options.
The project will cover100,000 people in 10 years. A healthy generation will come out of this project, as it is intended to target mainly vulnerable and marginalized children living in remote areas. After 10 years, this program will be handed over to the government to ensure its sustainability. This is a one-year project with a potential 9 more extended years up to 2030, subject to the constant flow of a recurring annual financial support.
