Drills Allow Us to Face Disasters Calmly

Potential Danger of Natural Nisasters

According to the analysis done by the World Bank in 2005 on the national effects of natural disasters on Earth, the risk of natural disasters happening in Taiwan is much higher than all other countries due to our geographical location and geological structure. Thus, it's vital for us to be able to coexist with the disasters.

Proactively Promote Community Disaster Prevention

As The Mustard Seed Mission proactively promotes community disaster prevention, we stay in close contact with local governments. Since May 2019, our local social worker teams have participated in emergency evacuation drills to train the response of the members in the communities and improve upon them, building a collaborative and mutual understandings between everyone.

During the drills, people would inevitably want to know more about children care zone. The social workers shared about the concept of setting up children care zone; when natural disasters hit, children are one of the communities that are easiest to be neglected. When the adults in the families are too busy cleaning up the mess, they won't have time to care about the children's mental health. The kids might even be traumatized afterwards and cry throughout the nights, further affecting the emotions of their parents and put the kids under the risk of domestic violence. Hence, by offering a safe and comfortable environment and interactions/games with social workers, we would be able to indicate the state of the children's mental health conditions and provide corresponding services, allowing them to alleviate what the disasters has brought to their lives.

We try to accumulate the experiences of the disaster drills, the government and other local organizations can immediately get involved and respond when actual disaster hit. None of us wants disasters to happen, but living in a world with dynamic climate conditions, we surely need to be prepared of everything possible.
