Our children face profound trauma from abuse,as well as poverty, hunger and a lack of protective environments.Adequate nutrition generates a social return expressed in improved cognitive abilities, neural development, increased school retention and strengthened families. That's why, for months we've been dreaming of providing daily meals to 100 children. This project seeks the physical adaptation and implementation of a dining hall to provide each child with one complete meal plus one snack per day
Many of our children try to heal deep traumas on an empty stomach, carrying the weight of emotional pain as well as the malnutrition, poverty, and food insecurity they experience at home. Some arrive at therapy with tired eyes, unable to concentrate, or they fall asleep during sessions. And there are days when the silence isn't shyness, but hunger. Sometimes, with limited resources, we offer them a snack, juice and a cookie, sometimes a piece of fruit. For some, that's their only food of the day
We understood that we needed to go beyond therapy. That protection and healing also require a hot nutritious meal every day. That feeding is also healing, each portion of food is an act of love and rebuilding. That's why we're dreaming of creating our Community Dining Hall for Children, where they will receive balanced meals daily so their bodies and brains can learn, regulate themselves, and heal. Where they feel cared for, protected and supported with nutrition, science, safety and hope.
When a child eats well, their body and mind are strengthened,as is their ability to think, remember, learn and regulate their emotions. Good nutrition in childhood transforms an entire life. A child who eats well has more energy to play, to learn, to rebuild their confidence and that energy translates into better academic skills,self-esteem, more confident decisions, and real opportunities. It helps them become an adult with fulfilled dreams, breaking cycles of violence and poverty.
