Exploring the new activities at the centre

I am writing to you today with an exciting update on our project which you have so generously supported via the GlobalGiving platform!

Thanks to the generosity of you and other donors, we have now secured all of the funding needed to set up three community caring centres in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with our two local charity partners. We are delighted that the project is now underway and that we will be able to provide all the support that we had planned.

I hope you are proud of the part you have played in changing the lives of the 55 children who will be able to attend the centres! As a result of your generosity, they will be able to meet their potential through individualised programmes of education and therapy. For most of the children, this is the first time they have received this kind of support.

As well as the impact on the children, their mothers will be able to take a well-earned break, safe in the knowledge that their child is being well cared for during the day. This respite from caring will allow them time to spend with their other children, to socialise and even to earn an income to better support their families. So your donation has been literally life changing!

As I write, the children are starting to attend the three community caring centres and are settling in, getting to know each other and the staff. They are receiving specialised assessments so that staff know exactly what type of educational input, therapy and care they will need over the coming months. Alongside this, the local staff have started a programme of training which will ensure they have all the skills needed to nurture the children’s development and provide a safe and inspiring environment for learning.

We are all excited to see the developments in the children and of course, I will keep you updated on their progress: the new skills they are learning, the friends they are making and the opportunities we are creating for their stronger, brighter futures.

We would like to thank you once again for your generous donation via the GlobalGiving platform. Your support has brought us closer to the point where we can launch the project, which will set up three community caring centres in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The centres will provide education and therapy to 55 disabled children. It will also give their mothers an opportunity for a break, knowing that their children are safe and cared for at the centre.

Latest update:

As a result of the generous support of people like you, along with donations from two charitable Trusts, we now only need to raise another £12,330 to reach our funding goal.

Our aim is to start the project in June of this year, and we are on track to do that. Thank you for helping us reach this point!

In the meantime, we have been working closely with the two teams in India who will be setting up and running the three centres. We have also been liaising with the local government department responsible for supporting the education of disabled children and have secured their commitment to providing the salaries for teachers and a physiotherapist at two of the centres. The local community have also got involved and we are working on plans to renovate the area around one of the buildings so that it will be safe and welcoming for the children.

The local teams have identified the children that will attend the centres. These children have never been included in a school setting before, so it is a big step for them and their families. The staff are making sure the children are happy and will be ready. They are also making sure they know as much as possible about the children so that they have a smooth transition.

Our Executive Director has visited the sites of the three centres and met with the teams. He came back inspired and said, “This project is so vital for the children and their families. The children will have a chance to learn and to make friends for the first time outside of their homes. The families and the staff have asked me to thank all the generous donors who have chosen to support the project and they are excited to get started!”
