Thanks to your generous donations, our community-based water quality monitoring program on the Futaleufú is spreading its wings and is about to fly! Over the past couple months, we have been working on ordering and assembling our monitoring equipment and arming a team of volunteer monitors—and, we have started with the training.
We held the first session in a weeklong series volunteer monitor capacitation workshops, taught by Omar Romagnoli of Global Water Watch. A group of 17 motivated members of the community are learning the principles of physio-chemical and bacteriological monitoring. At the end of the workshop, the volunteers will be certified to collect and report EPA-approved water quality data and will begin with monthly monitoring of sites along the Espolón and Futaleufú Rivers.
We are beyond excited to be the first to take these essential steps in protecting the Espolón and Futaleufú Rivers—but the work is far from over. Your funds allowed us to purchase the monitoring kits, bring Omar to Futaleufú to instruct the training course, and facilitate the workshops. Now, we need your continued support to maintain our equipment, purchase refills for our monitoring kits, and support our team of volunteer monitors!
