FIELD ACTIVITIES UPDATE

By Bahaludin | Director

Thank you so much for your donation to IDRAP work on Coral Reef Rehabilitation in South East Province in eastern part of Indonesia. Your generosity means everything to us and to the community we serve. We know you have a lot of choices when it comes to donating, and we are so grateful that you chose to donate to our cause. We promise to be responsible stewards of both your donation and your trust.

During this period, IDRAP placed artificial corals (made from used tires) in areas where the corals had been damaged. It is expected that within 6 months, the used tires placed on the seabed will have grown moss so that it will attract coral fish to come and colonize again by occupying the used tires as their new home. Thus, the coral habitat in the area will slowly recover so that it will become a place for local people to earn a living by catching fish without damaging the coral.

A total of 30 artificial coral units (each unit consists of 2 used tires) have been placed in 3 different locations with high levels of coral damage. Each location is placed with 10 artificial corals, lined up to resemble a coral cluster. IDRAP rents a boat and buys diesel fuel to load these artificial corals and bring them to the designated locations. Meanwhile, local people contribute their time and energy to transport the artificial corals and dive to place the artificial corals (used tires) on the seabed. 10 villagers participate in this activity, all of whom are men.

“I am very happy to be able to participate in transporting artificial coral and placing it on the seabed. This is a very valuable experience for me in participating in restoring the function of coral reefs in my village." Ilham, local fisherman in Southeast Sulawesi.

Thank you all for your support. We are all improving the future of the ocean, especially coral reefs as providers of nutrition not only for local communities but also for the world. Preserving coral reefs for present and future generations.
