FIELD ACTIVITIES UPDATE

By Bahaludin | Director

Thank you so much for your donation to IDRAP work on Coral Reef Rehabilitation in South East Province in eastern part of Indonesia. Your generosity means everything to us and to the community we serve. We know you have a lot of choices when it comes to donating, and we are so grateful that you chose to donate to our cause. We promise to be responsible stewards of both your donation and your trust.

In this second four-month period, field activities carried out by IDRAP was collecting tire waste (used tires) to be used as artificial coral. 60 used tires were collected and have been made become artificial coral units by tying 2 tires using nylon rope for each unit. 30 units of artificial coral have been made and are ready to be placed in areas where the coral has been damaged. The artificial corals are still being stored while waiting for the sea to calm down before being placed. 15 local people participated in the series of activities for collecting used tires and making artificial coral.

In addition to the activity of artificial coral made from used tires, IDRAP also provides outreach to local communities, especially the youth (students), to play a role in restoring damaged coral areas so that they can return to their function as fishing grounds for their parents (local fishers). Thus, the coral area can again become a source of income for the community while supplying nutrition/food for them. In this activity, IDRAP uses artificial coral (used tires) as a medium/demonstration for counseling by providing an understanding that used tires placed in damaged coral areas will be covered in moss after a few months. Because moss is fish food, it will attract fish to come and also become a place for fish to lay eggs. The meeting participants just realized that used goods such as used tires still have benefits as a home for fish when placed on the seabed. IDRAP also distributed campaign media in the form of t-shirts with printed awareness messages to protect coral reefs in their area.

“I am very interested to be part of this program because it provides me new knowledge. Through this program I just realized that waste items such as used tires can still be used as artificial coral which can eventually become a fishing location again." Fadli, local fisherman in Southeast Sulawesi.

Thank you all for your support. We are all improving the future of the ocean, especially coral reefs as providers of nutrition not only for local communities but also for the world. Preserving coral reefs for present and future generations.
