Protecting Schools from Ebola in Eastern DRC

By FERDINAND | Cordinator

In Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, children should be able to learn in a safe and healthy environment, yet recurrent Ebola outbreaks and other infectious disease risks continue to place vulnerable communities under pressure. Our Community and School Actions Against Ebola in DRC project was created to help protect more than 15,000 students, teachers, families, and community members across 30 schools in high-risk areas. With a total project budget of US$150,000, the initiative will strengthen prevention through handwashing facilities, hygiene and sanitation supplies, Ebola awareness, infection-prevention education, and practical training for teachers, students, and community volunteers.

The project is currently entering its implementation phase. To ensure that activities respond to the realities of each community, our team is conducting the identification and preparation of trainers and learners who will participate in the upcoming sessions. We are also preparing the school and community activities that will introduce practical hygiene measures, strengthen early prevention knowledge, and support school health clubs. At this stage, US$0 has been raised, and no project funds are being reported as spent. This transparent starting point reflects our commitment to responsible reporting and to ensuring that every contribution is connected to clearly defined activities and community needs.

Our partnership with GlobalGiving is an important opportunity to mobilize the resources needed to move this project from preparation to action. Through this collaboration, we hope to reach a wider community of international donors who believe that prevention, education, and community participation can save lives and keep children learning. Once fully funded, the project will help schools establish safer hygiene practices, equip local actors with practical prevention skills, and strengthen community preparedness beyond the project period. We warmly thank GlobalGiving and every donor who has already supported, shared, or encouraged this initiative, and we invite individuals, foundations, organizations, and partners around the world to join us. Your contribution can help place prevention tools in a school, support a teacher with life-saving knowledge, and give children a safer environment in which to learn and grow.
