Cancer can be an incredibly lonely experience for a young person.
A diagnosis often means months away from school, college, university, work and friends. Life continues while they are in hospital or recovering at home. Even when treatment ends, returning to the life they once knew is rarely straightforward. Friendships may have changed, confidence can be low and many young people tell us that they feel as though nobody truly understands what they have been through.
This project is called Tackling Loneliness, but what your support makes possible is so much more than reducing isolation.
It creates a journey back to belonging.
At Teens Unite, we know that belonging isn't something that happens overnight. It grows through shared experiences, trusted relationships and the confidence that comes from knowing you are accepted exactly as you are. That is why our work is not simply about organising activities. Every opportunity is intentionally designed to help young people take another step on that journey.
We also know that saying "yes" isn't always easy.
Many of the young people we support worry that they won't fit in, that everyone else will already know each other or that they won't feel confident enough to join in. Some tell us they no longer recognise themselves after treatment. Others quietly question whether they should accept the invitation at all, wondering if someone else deserves the opportunity more than they do.
Hearing this is heartbreaking because every one of those young people deserves the chance to reconnect, rebuild their confidence and find joy again.
That is why we never expect a young person to be ready.
Instead, we make sure there is always a next step when they are.
Thanks to your generosity through GlobalGiving, we continue to create opportunities that meet young people exactly where they are, recognising that everyone's journey is different.
For one young person, that first step may be joining a digital film or book discussion from the comfort of home, where there is no pressure to speak and simply being present is enough.
For another, it may be logging into one of our Fit From Home sessions, rebuilding physical confidence alongside other young people who understand the challenges of recovery.
As confidence grows, many choose to take part in face-to-face experiences, whether that's visiting Warner Bros. Studios to explore careers in the creative industries, attending a Harry Styles concert with young people they've never met before, or joining one of our many other activities designed to bring young people together.
The activities themselves may be different, but they all share the same purpose.
Every opportunity is designed to create connection.
Connection creates belonging.
Belonging builds confidence.
Confidence encourages participation.
Participation creates possibility.
We see this journey unfold time and time again. A young person who is too anxious to attend an event joins an online session instead. Someone who logs in quietly with their camera turned off later finds the confidence to attend their first in-person activity. A young person who arrives knowing no one leaves with new friends, renewed confidence and the reassuring feeling that they truly belong.
The individual activities matter, but they are not the destination. They are carefully designed stepping stones that help young people rebuild confidence, rediscover who they are beyond cancer and begin to imagine a future full of opportunity once again.
To everyone who has supported this project, thank you.
Your generosity has done far more than reduce loneliness. You have helped create a community where young people feel understood, accepted and valued for exactly who they are.
Every opportunity you make possible becomes another step on a young person's journey back to belonging.
For a young person whose world has been turned upside down by cancer, that journey can change everything. It is the journey from isolation to friendship, from uncertainty to confidence, from simply getting through each day to believing that the future holds possibility once again.
As our services continue to evolve, we remain committed to ensuring that no young person faces cancer alone. Together, we are creating more than opportunities to take part. We are creating a community where every young person can find connection, belonging and the confidence to look towards the future with hope.
Thank you for continuing to be part of this journey.
