Project Report | Dec 1, 2025
Essential connections

By Lesley Lowden-Smith | Trust Income Manager

Over the past reporting period, your support has helped us take meaningful steps to reduce the deep loneliness and isolation young people face when cancer enters their lives. A diagnosis in the teenage and young adult years disrupts friendships, education, independence, and identity. Treatment schedules, physical side effects, and prolonged recovery can push young people away from their peers at the moment they need connection most.

Thanks to you, we have been able to create safe, welcoming spaces—both online and in hospital settings—where young people can meet others who truly understand.

Digital “Meet the Team” Event

This event is an essential first step for any young person joining Teens Unite. Many arrive feeling nervous or unsure, having spent months or even years feeling disconnected from others their age. Our Meet the Team sessions bring together young people who are new to us, introducing them to each other and to our Youth Engagement Team.

They learn about upcoming opportunities, start to recognise familiar faces, and begin building those first small but meaningful connections that help ease the fear of being alone.

Online Gaming Hub

We know that connection doesn’t always start with conversation—it often begins through shared activity. Our online Gaming Hub gave young people the chance to log on, relax, and take part in a variety of games together.

But it wasn’t really about the gaming. It was about laughter, teamwork, friendly competition, and the joy of spending time with people who “get it.” Many told us afterwards that it was the first time in months they felt part of something fun and social again.

Hospital-Based Escape Room Activity

For young people currently receiving treatment in hospital, everyday social moments can feel completely out of reach. We brought a pop-up Escape Room–style challenge directly to the ward, offering a rare chance for young people to step away from their beds, work together, and meet others going through similar experiences.

These moments of early engagement are vital. They help young people realise they don’t have to face cancer on their own, even while treatment continues.

Thanks to your generosity, young people living with and beyond cancer are rediscovering companionship, confidence, and a sense of belonging. You are helping them take the first steps from isolation towards community—and it is making a life-changing difference.
