When life gives you lemons......

By Lesley Lowden-Smith | Trust Income Manager

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve been able to bring colour, creativity, and connection to young people spending time in hospital – and we’re thrilled to share some of the highlights with you.

Over the past few weeks, our team has been visiting wards where young people are receiving treatment – some staying in for long periods, others visiting for day treatments or follow-up appointments. For many, these hospital visits can feel long, isolating, and emotionally draining. That’s why our sessions are designed not just to pass the time, but to spark joy, conversation, and community.

At University College London Hospitals (UCLH), we hosted canvas painting sessions across four different wards. Young people were able to choose their own designs – some created vibrant abstracts, others painted calming landscapes – and each canvas became a personal expression of creativity. The sessions were full of relaxed chatter, shared tips, and the kind of gentle humour that only comes when people feel at ease.

Then, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, we switched things up with a reusable cup decorating activity. Each young person designed their own cup to take away – something practical they could use every day, and a small reminder that they are part of a wider community that cares. And because we like to pair creativity with a treat, we also made homemade lemonade together. As the saying goes, when life gives you lemons… we make it a moment to connect, laugh, and share something refreshing.

These activities may seem simple, but they make a real difference. They offer young people a break from the clinical routine, a chance to focus on something uplifting, and a safe space to chat with peers who understand.

Your generosity makes it possible for us to combat loneliness in these moments – turning hospital time into an opportunity for connection, creativity, and care. Thank you for making that happen.
