Sri Lanka, A Lasting Investment (Micro Enterprise)

By Gretchen H. Lange | Director of Development

Sri Lanka Micro Enterprise
Sri Lanka Micro Enterprise
Did you know that seven years ago Children's Emergency Relief International (CERI) instituted the first foster care program in Sri Lanka that is still in operation today? In the beginning, foster families relied on a stipend, or financial payments, from CERI to help them survive. In 2008, however, CERI introduced "Micro Enterprise" to its families with the goal of encouraging self-sufficiency among foster parents. The benefits of this endeavor are three-fold and have been overwhelming:

1. Families are now able to be proactive and have control of their livelihood

2. Foster parents who are too old or incapacitated to seek employment elsewhere are able to perform the duties of their self-employment at home

3. CERI's foster families are now able to provide jobs for other citizens, thereby positively impacting Sri Lanka's economy

Are you willing to make a sustainable difference in the lives of Sri Lankan foster families and children through Micro Enterprise? Join CERI's efforts and make a contribution today!
