Following the strongest quake to impact Colombia in a decade, Direct Relief is supporting immediate health needs, including air transport of medical personnel, supplies, and blood units bound for hard-to-access areas near the quake's epicenter.
Direct Relief is working to strengthen the people and health systems already responding. Earthquakes create an immediate surge in trauma while damaging hospitals, roads, power and water systems. Direct Relief works through local health organizations and regional authorities to identify precise needs, move requested medical resources efficiently and sustain essential care as needs shift from rescue to recovery.
Direct Relief is deploying emergency operating funds to Patrulla Aerea Civil Colombiana, or PAC, which will procure and deliver urgently needed medical supplies and provide humanitarian air transport into Condoto and other affected municipalities in Choco, the region surrounding the earthquake's epicenter. The area was severely impacted by the quake, and much of Choco is reachable only by boat or plane, necessitating air transport.
Earthquakes create an immediate wave of trauma while disrupting the health services people rely on every day. Direct Relief is in close contact with health organizations in Colombia, preparing the medical support they request and planning not only for the emergency phase, but for the long recovery that follows.
