Thanks to your generous support, local organizations are already delivering critical aid to communities just days after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10th.

Our first round of grants from the Colombia Earthquake Relief Fund has already begun fueling local response to some of the most critical and immediate needs: food, water, and shelter. This first grant round reflects one of many that will bolster a wide range of responses across local impacted communities.

Here is a short description of the work your donation is already supporting:

  • Banco de Alimentos de Bogotá is distributing food and essential items throughout Valle de Cauca and Chocó, prioritizing food security and strengthening the local presence of food banks in the region.
  • Un Techo para mi Pais Colombia (TECHO Colombia) is conducting needs assessments, purchasing emergency housing materials, deploying transitional housing modules for families whose homes were destroyed, distributing essential supplies, and organizing community-led cleanup and reconstruction efforts. TECHO Colombia is focusing their response in Quibdó, Chocó; one of the hardest-hit and most vulnerable areas, even prior to the quake.
  • Children Change Colombia has been working with rural and Indigenous communities in the impacted areas of the Chocó and Valle de Cauca regions for years, and is now providing mental health support and distributing food items to impacted families post-quake.
  • Corporacion Educativa Luisa Valentina (CORPELUVA) is based in Cali, where one of its education centers was severely damaged by the earthquake, forcing the school to temporarily close. CORPELUVA aims to rebuild their school as soon as possible, using earthquake-resistant technology while ensuring the continuity of education for students affected. The organization also plans to provide mental health support and community healing to impacted students and their families.

As the TECHO Colombia team shared:

“Thank you so much. For TECHO Colombia, and especially during an emergency like the one we are experiencing, having the trust and mobilization capacity of GlobalGiving is fundamental.”

This work could not be accomplished without your support. Thank you for standing with our partners as they stand to face this unimaginable crisis and rebuild their communities.

With gratitude,

Alli + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
