The Challenge: When Education Has No Classroom

In Malikpur, Punjab, students continue their education despite inadequate infrastructure, including open-air learning spaces, limited washroom facilities, and the absence of dedicated science and computer laboratories. For girls from underprivileged families, these challenges compound existing barriers to continuing education.

According to the World Bank's 2024 research on girls' education in Pakistan, approximately 29% of rural families report that schools are too far away. Limited access to nearby educational institutions, particularly beyond primary school, remains a significant barrier to girls' enrollment and attendance.

Why Infrastructure Matters

Safe and functional facilities are essential to creating an environment where students can learn with dignity. The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (2024) estimates that 427 million children worldwide lack access to basic sanitation services at school, underscoring the importance of adequate, private washroom facilities.

The benefits of keeping girls in education extend far beyond the classroom. A 2023 peer-reviewed study by Musaddiq and Said, published in World Development, found that a secondary-school stipend programme in Punjab increased girls' educational completion and reduced the likelihood of early marriage and childbirth.

Our Commitment to Malikpur

NUR Foundation continues fundraising for a purpose-built college comprising seven classrooms, a science laboratory, a computer laboratory, a multipurpose hall, and four washrooms. Once completed and operational, the facility is intended to serve more than 500 students annually.

Construction funding remains a significant challenge. Meanwhile, NUR Foundation continues supporting educational access through its wider Adopt-a-Student initiative, helping students meet essential educational expenses while the long-term infrastructure project progresses.
