The past couple of months have been quite busy for Clara Luna. We are continuing with our normally scheduled clubs and adding in some new activities. One that I would like to highlight is Reading in the Park that we do every other Tuesday in the main square of Puerto Lopez. In conjunction with another foundation in Puerto Lopez, we bring around 100 books and blankets to the center for children and their families to read. It allows us to spread the knowledge and importance of reading to more kids and families in Puerto Lopez. Our next reading in the park event is coming up this Tuesday.
This past week in our kids club we learned all about music. We invited a local guitarist and pianist to come teach the children about these instruments. At the end, we all sang three songs together and the kids smiles said it all. In our club for kids with special needs, we continue to work on many arts and crafts that have them fine tune their motor skills. This week we read the very hungry caterpillar and made caterpillars out of popsicle sticks and puff balls. With the same club, we also now have a monthly surf day where the kids with special needs go to the ocean to do something they normally wouldn't be able to. Volunteers come from a local surf town to help us out and we have around 15 participants each month. If the kids are not on a surf board, they are cheering on their friends, playing soccer on the beach, or jumping into the waves.
Our youth group is continuously growing and we are always exploring new ways to teach about leadership and volunteerism. Stay tuned for a current project we are working on to promote volunteerism, a flash mob!
With your donations, we continue to make improvements to our clubs and programs. This past month we were able to better the reading space where the children read by adding some more seating furniture. The kids are even more excited about reading because now, they have a fun and comfortable place to do it. We are also able to purchase any supplies we may need to do our activities during the clubs, which makes for more creative learning and diversity in activities.
Again, thank you for all the continued support. We would not be where we are today without your generous donations.
Sending our love from Puerto Lopez,
The Clara Luna Team
