Young women in Sierra Leone face limited livelihood opportunities while climate change continues to worsen deforestation, household air pollution, and environmental degradation. This project trains young women to produce clean, energy-efficient briquettes and other eco-friendly cooking alternatives. By equipping them with green skills and income opportunities, we help them protect the environment, reduce reliance on charcoal, and build a cleaner and healthier Sierra Leone.
In Sierra Leone, millions of households rely on firewood and charcoal for daily cooking. This practice accelerates deforestation, contributes to indoor air pollution, and increases household expenses. Young women, especially those in low-income and rural settings are heavily affected. With limited access to training and employment, they remain vulnerable despite potential to lead climate action in their communities. Without viable alternatives, both climate impact and economic hardship continues
This project trains young women to produce eco-friendly briquettes from agricultural waste and biodegradable materials. The training includes business management, safe production techniques, and environmental education. The goal is to help women build sustainable micro-enterprises that provide clean cooking options for households, reduce dependence on firewood, and contribute to climate resilience. It will also support women with starter kits and market-linkage support to scale their businesses.
Over time, this project creates a network of climate-smart women entrepreneurs who contribute to reduced deforestation, lower carbon emissions, healthier households, and stronger community resilience. The briquette enterprises provide stable, local income opportunities for young women, increase their economic independence, and elevate them as local leaders in environmental sustainability. The impact is a cleaner cooking method driven by empowered women who turn green skills into lasting change.
