Summary

In Yei River County, South Sudan, conflict and displacement are driving severe food insecurity, with 43% of Central Equatoria's population facing Crisis or worse. RRM will help 300 refugee and vulnerable households (1,800 people), prioritising women and youth, grow food and earn income through five women-led climate-smart farming hubs, 300 nutrition gardens, seed banks and market linkages. The 12-month project will help families move from food-aid dependence toward sustainable self-reliance.

Challenge

South Sudan faces severe food insecurity, with 5.97 million people (42%) in Crisis or worse in 2025; Central Equatoria had 751,000 (43%) affected. Yei also received over 20,000 returnees, increasing pressure on food and livelihoods. Nationally, about 70% of people require humanitarian assistance, while only about 2 million received WFP food assistance in 2025. Refugee and vulnerable households in Yei therefore need sustainable farming to reduce aid dependence.

Solution

RRM will establish 5 refugee women-led climate-smart farming hubs where 150 refugee women and youth receive practical training, climate-resilient seeds and farmer-to-farmer mentoring. 300 households will develop nutrition gardens, while 3 community seed banks led by 30 refugee women will multiply locally adapted seeds. Ten refugee-led producer groups will aggregate and sell surplus through Yei markets, helping families produce food, earn income and progressively reduce dependence on humanitarian

Long-Term Impact

The project will help 300 households (approximately 1,800 people) build lasting food and livelihood security. By strengthening women-led farming, seed systems and market access, at least 70% of households are expected to sustain household food production beyond the project, while 60% continue earning income from agricultural surpluses. The model will reduce dependence on humanitarian food assistance, strengthen women's economic leadership, and improve resilience to climate shocks and future food
