Rising fuel costs, coastal abrasion, and unpredictable weather threaten small-scale fishers in Suradadi, Tegal. YAFSI pilots solar-powered electric boats and biodegradable FADs on 3 boats over 6 months, cutting fuel costs and marine debris. The project trains fishers and technicians, empowers 20+ women, and protects 100+ children - building a replicable, climate-resilient model. This campaign funds phase one: one electrified boat and one eco-friendly FAD, as proof of concept.
Fishers in Suradadi, Tegal face abrasion, seawater intrusion, and river sedimentation disrupting fishing grounds, plus volatile fuel costs eating into thin incomes. Many still use FADs made of tires and plastic, leaving debris on the seafloor. Women in fishing households are largely excluded from technology training and economic decisions, and children face real risks when family income becomes unpredictable.
YAFSI converts 3 boats to solar-electric power, cutting fuel costs, and co-designs biodegradable FADs to replace plastic ones, reducing marine debris. Fishers and local technicians are trained to maintain the system long-term. Women join economic workshops; child-safeguarding sessions protect children. A baseline-to-endline test tracks fuel savings, catch results, and durability, producing a proven, replicable model for other coastal communities.
If successful, pilot boats cut fuel costs long-term, and eco-friendly FADs protect fish stocks instead of polluting the seafloor. Trained technicians and a maintenance fund sustain equipment after the project ends. Results become a replicable "Green Fishing Community" model for other coastal villages along Tegal and Java's north coast, with women's economic roles and child protection built in. This campaign funds phase one; full-scale rollout will need additional support.
