Case Study: Reshma – Transforming Capsicum Cultivation

Farmer: Reshma
Crop: Capsicum

Reshma, a progressive woman farmer, who has faced challenges with low yields, high input costs, and soil degradation. In 2024, she decided to cultivate capsicum using improved and sustainable methods with guidance from the Mann Deshi Agriculture Centre.

Key Interventions by Mann Deshi Agriculture Centre

  • Soil Testing & Fertilizer Plan: Soil testing revealed micronutrient deficiencies. A customized fertilizer schedule was created based on the report.
  • Agronomist Support: Regular field visits provided technical guidance on pest control and crop management.
  • Organic Input Training: Trained in preparing Jivamrut and vermicompost, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.
  • Thrips Management: Adopted Neem-based sprays, sticky traps, and timely pest control strategies.
  • Polyhouse Shade Net Use: Controlled temperature and reduced pest incidence, minimizing the need for chemical sprays.

Economic Benefits:

  • Yield increased from 8 tons to 25 tons.
  • Input costs reduced by 40% through use of on-farm organic inputs.
  • Net income rose from 2.40 lakh to 7.5 lakh.

Environmental Benefits:

  • Improved soil health and organic content.
  • Reduced chemical residue through integrated pest management.
  • Eco-friendly pest control practices maintained crop health with minimal pesticide use.

"I used to rely only on what the shopkeeper advised, but now I understand my soil, my crop, and my field better. Mann Deshi Agriculture Centre gave me knowledge, not just advice. I feel confident and proud to be a capsicum farmer today." - Reshma

Inspired by her transformation, Reshma is now a role model for sustainable farming in her village and has created employment opportunities for 10–15 women
