Summary

Extreme weather events in Brazil are intensifying due to climate change and El Nino. Floods and landslides are displacing vulnerable communities, precisely the ones with little access to immediate support. This project aims to provide rapid, direct funding to local grassroots organizations, enabling emergency response within days. Your support helps deliver food, water, shelter, and protection when it matters most: saving lives and strengthening community resilience.

Challenge

Brazil recorded 7,539 climate disasters between 2020-2023, a 222.8% increase compared to the 2,335 occurrences recorded in the 1990s. During the same period, the proportion of affected municipalities jumped from 27% to 83%. Rainfall was responsible for 86% of the deaths recorded in climate disasters in the country. In 2020-23, approximately 8.7 million people were left homeless or displaced due to floods-a number that corresponds to 94% of all cases in the period.

Solution

Casa Fund delivers small emergency grants (USD 5,000-20,000) within days to support community-led responses, including: emergency food and clean water distribution; temporary shelter and essential supplies; rescue for community leaders; recovery of livelihoods and local economies. Unlike traditional aid, resources go directly to local actors, ensuring faster, more effective, and culturally appropriate responses.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 10-20 direct rapid-response emergency grants to grassroots organizations affected by climate disasters in Brazil. We expect to support at least 5,000 people, delivering funding within 5-10 days after an emergency event happens. Support immediate needs such as food, clean water, shelter, and essential supplies enables early recovery actions to restore livelihoods and community safety in the medium and long-term.
