The Seed of Hope Emergency Fund will help more than 1,000 vocational students per year across Dagoretti informal settlement in Nairobi, rural Kariti and remote Kangweni to prepare for and respond to climate shocks, including El Nino-related flooding, drought and extreme weather. We raise funds to provide emergency food, hygiene and safe-water supplies, learning materials and mobile data/Wi-Fi, helping students stay safe and connected to their training when climate events disrupt daily life.
Kenya's recurring climate shocks, from floods to prolonged drought, disrupt homes, livelihoods, transport, water access and education. During the 2023-24 El Nino rains, 300,000 people were displaced. About 2 million learners were affected, with around half a million children and young people not returning after schools reopened. Those in Nairobi accounted for half of those affected by the catastrophic flash flooding. This Emergency Fund will support the 1,000+ learners at Seed of Hope each year.
At Seed of Hope vocational training centres, we prepare before and respond quickly when climate shocks affect our students. The Emergency Fund will provide practical assistance during flooding and drought including food, sanitary pads and hygiene essentials, learning materials, mobile data, and safe-water and disease-prevention supplies. This will help students stay safe, meet basic needs and continue vocational training when homes, transport, livelihoods or access to water are disrupted.
The fund will help prevent climate-related emergencies from becoming prolonged interruptions to vocational training. It will also enable Seed of Hope to support continuity of training and reduce the risk of disengagement. Over time, this strengthens young people's ability to complete training, develop livelihoods and build greater resilience to future climate shocks.
