In early 2024, I participated in Peru's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) update process alongside national and international civil society actors as part of the global Environment-Fragility-Peace Nexus initiative. It was an experience of the power of Indigenous knowledge held and created by women from across Peru, and why their lived experience is essential for effective environmental policy. It also underscored the challenges Indigenous women face in policy processes on issues that directly impact them, from how the priorities and logistics of such processes are set to how engagement, decision-making, and implementation take place.
We recently published a case exploration highlighting the critical role of Amazon Indigenous women in biodiversity conservation and their invaluable contributions to the muti-stakeholder process of updating the NBSAP. CDA applied the listening methodology to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous women.
