To continue and support the Climate Change Adaptive Community Practice, the project Khutlang (Working in unison towards Empowerment),plans to enable women farmers in adopting climate smart farming practices and recognize them as farmers by the society and government. It plans to assist the women in enhancing their knowledge and skill on soil management, usages of natural manure, climate resilient seeds, diversify crop production and crop rotation, pest management etc. It will bring the women under farmers collectives to share resources, ideas, skill etc. Community will be assisted how to reduce the shifting cultivation and start practicing settled cultivation in the hilly areas.
The team so far identified 250 women farmers across Thamlai, Khongkhang, Heinoukhong, Tengnoupal and Yonyer villages under Tengnoupal district of Manipur who are economically and socially deprived but extensively engage in farming for their livelihood.
Baseline survey and assessment of the practices in the five specific villages were conducted to understand the livelihood options existing within the village, its prevalence and challenges.
Trainings on the importance of usage of vermicompost, animal waste, bokashi and natural pesticides component were conducted in the project villages.
FST in collaboration with Government departments Manipur is looking forward to conduct awareness program on available schemes for women farmers in the villages. Further, orientation, training and capacity building on the importance of intercropping and crop rotation will also be initiated accordingly.
