Summary

This ocean cleanup nonprofit, Ocean Blue Project, aims to recover 5 million pounds of plastic and disaster debris from coastal communities, particularly those hardest hit by hurricanes such as Helene and Milton in Florida during 2024. Every 1 U.S. Dollar donated facilitates the recovery of 5 pounds of disaster debris. With climate change and warming waters, support for these communities, along with the marine animals that inhabit them, is more crucial than ever.

Challenge

If you have experienced a hurricane then you know the devastation such forces of nature have on life and property. Climate change brings warming and rising seas with an increase in flooding which means the outlook for coastal communities and water quality is increasingly worse. According to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Hurricane Ian alone left behind over 30 million cubic yards of disaster debris and with limited resources the debris response is still lingering 6 months later.

Solution

This project will tackle 2024 hurricane debris by funding cleanup operations to remove dangerous waste that endangers ocean life and human health. Ocean Blue provides crucial support where federal funding is limited during the debris cleanup stage of disaster and emergency response. By restoring water quality and protecting ecosystems, the project enhances safety and resilience in coastal communities, mitigating the long-term effects of climate-induced disasters.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of successfully executing this project includes significant improvements in environmental and community resilience. By efficiently removing hurricane debris and restoring water quality, the project helps to safeguard marine life and human lives, fostering healthier ecosystems. The collaboration between Ocean Blue and local communities enhances their ability to respond to future climate-related challenges.
