Project Progress and Achievements
Sheepcare Community Centre continues to work towards improving access to safe and affordable drinking water for vulnerable households and institutions in Soweto Slums;Nairobi-Kenya,and the surrounding community through our Water Springs and Milele Purified Water.
Through our Milele Purified Water initiative, we have continued to strengthen local access to safe drinking water. Our water treatment plant has the capacity to produce over 5000 litres of purified water daily, helping meet the needs of households, schools, and other community institutions. The project has supported more than 350 households and institutions,
We have established 2 additional water distribution points that have helped bring water closer to community members. As a result, the average distance travelled to access water has been reduced from approximately one kilometre to less than 300 metres.
Our school-based water initiative also supports more than 400 children in our primary and junior secondary sections by improving access to safe drinking water during the school day.
Impact on the Community
By bringing water closer to residents, the project has helped reduce the time and effort spent fetching water and makes safe drinking water more accessible to families with limited resources.
We have also continued promoting water, sanitation, and hygiene awareness among women and youth groups. These activities encourage better hygiene practices and strengthen community participation in preventing waterborne diseases.
Challenges
The project continues to face financial constraints that affect the expansion and long-term sustainability of water services. The cost of operating and maintaining water treatment equipment, purchasing supplies, and extending distribution infrastructure remains a challenge.
Growing community needs also make it important to mobilize additional resources to reach more households and maintain reliable access to safe drinking water.
Next Plans
Sheepcare Community Centre plans to:
Strengthen the sustainability and maintenance of the water treatment plant by Installing automated botlle filling machine to icrease the production rate.
Expand access to affordable purified water for underserved households by establishing additional water refill points .
Increase community education on hygiene and safe water handling, we plan to do 2 community awareness campains before the year ends .
Mobilize additional funding and partnerships to expand water distribution services by installing additional piping and storage tanks
