Bringing Clean Water Closer to Families

By Joshua Omondi | Project Leader

Introduction

Clean water for the Community is an Initiative by Sheepcare Community Centre that seeks to improve access to safe and clean water for vulnerable households while promoting better health, sanitation, and community well-being.

Through the support of  our donors and partners we have been able to continue transforming lives through sustainable water solutions.

Project Background

Many families within Soweto;Kayole,Nairobi-Kenya often faced challenges in accessing clean and safe water. Women and children  spent several hours each day walking long distances to collect water from unsafe sources, which exposed them to waterborne diseases and reduced time available for education and income-generating activities.

The Clean Water for the Community Project was established to address these challenges by improving water accessibility, strengthening community management systems, and promoting hygiene and sanitation practices.

Key Achievements

The project has recorded significant progress during the last four months, including:

  • We have maintained a steady supply of  safe and clean water for community members, this has been made possible by the installation of Solar pannels which have ensued we can pump water everyday even during electricity blackouts. .
  • We have conducted 2 Community mobilization and awareness meetings to educate the community on the need for hygiene and clean water..
  • Hygiene and sanitation education sessions for our school children to be able to carry the practices to their homes hence community transformation.
  • We have sustained our water purification plant hence the community have been able to get purified drinking water closer through our water refill station.

These achievements are contributing to improved health outcomes and increased productivity among community members.

Impact on Beneficiaries

The project has positively impacted the lives of many families by providing easier access to clean water.

Community members have reported:

  • Reduced cases of water-related illnesses.
  • Improved personal and household hygiene.
  • Increased school attendance among children.
  • More time for economic and educational activities.

The availability of clean water has also improved the overall quality of life for vulnerable households within the project area.

Beneficiary Story

One of the beneficiaries, Mary, a mother of four, previously spent several hours each day walking to a distant water source. The water collected was often unsafe for domestic use. Through the Clean Water for the Community Project, Mary now accesses clean water much closer to her home. The time she once spent fetching water is now dedicated to her small vegetable business, which has improved her family's income and food security. Mary's story reflects the broader impact that access to clean water is having on families across the community.

Challenges Encountered

Despite the progress made, several challenges continue to affect project implementation:

  • Increased demand for water services due to population growth.
  • Limited resources for expanding water infrastructure.
  • Maintenance costs for existing water facilities is quite straining.

These challenges highlight the need for continued support and investment in sustainable water solutions.

Future Plans

In the next phase of the project, Sheepcare Community Centre plans to:

  • Moving fully to the use of solar for both the pumping of water and purification process, this is by installing Solar batteries and Inverters to be able to store the solar energy, this project will cost us $4500
  • Strengthen maintenance and monitoring systems to reduce operation cost
  • Conducting an overwhole maintanance and Repair on the system to increase efficiency
  • Mobilize additional resources to improve water infrastructure; Purchasing additional tanks and increasing our piping network, this is estimated to cost $1950

These activities will help ensure long-term sustainability and increased community impact.
