We seek to provide 20 water filters benefitting 200+ families affected by the earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10th, 2026. The quake damaged critical water and sanitation infrastructure in the Choco region, leaving families without potable water as they rebuild their homes and communities. This project will specifically benefit Palo Seco, Buenaventura, a low-income Afro-Colombian neighborhood that has spent decades fighting for equitable access to clean water.
The Colombian govt. has failed to secure clean water access for Palo Seco for decades. Locals have adapted by building DIY water storage systems on their rooftops; these systems represent the community's resilience and generations-long effort to secure this basic right in the face of structural inequalities. The quake's destruction of these storage systems has created a devastating setback in Palo Seco's fight for water equality, and placed thousands at risk of waterborne sickness.
We are seeking to raise $1620 USD to provide 20 water filters to benefit 200+ families in Palo Seco. Each filter can purify up to 40 litres of water at a time and will be placed at key community sites around the city. The filters will provide access to clean drinking and cooking water, help prevent the spread of disease among communities that are already suffering from unsafe living conditions, and recognize the community's struggle to secure this basic but vital right.
These filters will dramatically improve the community's capacity to heal from this disaster. Making sure that basic needs are taken care of, such as food, clean water, and safe shelter, will allow the community to focus its efforts on rebuilding. Preventing disease caused by contaminated water will save hundreds of people from unnecessary sickness. Lastly, the filters are a step towards equity for a community whose fundamental rights to clean water have been long overlooked by those in charge.
