Madimba, DRC - June 11, 2016
Thanks to you, the CEDERI-Madimba Clean Water Project is well underway! At CEDERI-Madimba Health Center, children are treated for many preventable illnesses, including water-borne diseases and parasites. So instead of just treating illness, project leader Ferdinand Bisalu decided to take things in hand by bringing clean drinking water from a nearby spring to both the health center and the nearby village of Kimbololo, population of 4836. He has been helped by SD Congo, SDIA and you the donors. Many thanks!
The population of Kimbololo is higher now than when we first brought you this project, as babies are born and people move into this area in the hope of a better life: one with access to clean water, electricity, healthcare and education. The mothers of the village welcomed our visit on June 10th, telling us how happy they are that SD Congo and CEDERI and all the donors have agreed to help them. As one mother said: “We have to get up very early each morning, to walk and carry back heavy tubs of water that we need to wash our children, prepare food, clean and wash the clothes. Our thanks to those who helped make this project happen. Soon we will have clean water just steps away from our homes.”
We also asked the men why it is only the women who do the arduous work of collecting water. They told us “That is our custom. Women collect water, because they love cleanliness, and need to wash the children and the clothes.” Don’t the men also like cleanliness we asked? “Yes", one said, "but the women like it more.” One told us: "We are very grateful for this project because it lightens the heavy burden that the women here have to bear everyday."
Bringing 5000 liters of clean water per day to the village will lighten the arduous work of water collection for women and young girls in Kimbololo where the water point is being installed and improve the health of the community. The well has been dug and its container built, the pump to move the water through the pipes has been purchased, and soon the trenches will be dug to lay the pipes that will carry the water from the well to the health center and the village water point. The project completion is planned tor July 20th. We will keep you posted!
