Clean Water for 100 Villages in Nigeria

In early 2025, the President of Vision Center International (VCI) received a desperate WhatsApp message from a young man living in Taku-Allah Community, Bosso LGA, Niger State. He explained that more than 500 residents, including women and children, had no access to potable water. Their only source of water was a contaminated stream shared with cows, goats, and other animals. Families cooked, washed, bathed, and drank from the same source, leading to frequent diarrheal diseases, skin infections, and missed school days among children. His plea was simple but urgent: “Please help us. We are suffering.”

VCI immediately dispatched a field team for verification, and what we found was even more troubling than what was reported. The level of contamination was severe, and the community had never experienced clean pipe-borne water. With this confirmation, VCI began a six-month effort to mobilize resources, secure technical partners, and design a solution suitable for an off-grid rural settlement. A solar-powered borehole system was chosen to ensure sustainability in a community without electricity. Despite financial and logistical challenges, the project moved forward through the generosity of donors and the dedication of VCI volunteers.

This November, we proudly commissioned the solar-powered borehole. Hundreds of villagers gathered—women dancing, children playing around the pumps, and even the men shedding tears of gratitude. The village chief, overwhelmed with emotion, said he never believed he would see clean water in his lifetime. Today, over 500 individuals now have access to safe, reliable water for drinking, cooking, hygiene, and daily use—an achievement that has already begun reducing disease burden and improving school attendance.

Since our last report, VCI has continued strengthening our community development efforts by conducting follow-up visits, providing hygiene education, and documenting community health improvements associated with the new water source. We remain committed to expanding this impact to other underserved communities and are deeply grateful to our partners whose support made this life-changing project possible.
