Build Resilient Communities With Solar in Nepal

This is what renewable energy means for remote communities in Nepal

Bimala is with her baby girl Divya who suffers breathing difficulties after being hospitalised with pneumonia when she was born. Divya needs regular nebulisation - thanks to their community health post that now has solar powered electricity, they don’t have to walk hours for this essential health care.

Solar microgrid systems we’ve installed in a number of health posts power medical equipment and fridges to store vaccines. In some areas at risk of extreme flooding they also run early warning systems.

Renewable energy is the lifeline for millions of people in off-grid communities – it impacts on health, nutrition, poverty, education and means the difference between adapting to the effects of climate change or not.

It costs around $105 today for us to bring a solar system to a family in a rural area of Nepal and this will also assist with access to clean water but this project is 100% funded by donations and therefore the last couple of months our cash has been low so our teams have changed their efforts to fundraising. We hope to raise enough money to kick start our project and reach more rural communities before the end of the year.

I personally thank you as a donor of this project as without your support life for Bimala like many villagers would be very different. Our work doesn't stop here and we need to help more communities.

Introduction 

The need for improved resilience towards disasters became clear after areas in Nepal were devastated by floods in 2014. Many people are still without homes, electricity and running water, which directly affects most aspects of their lives, especially healthcare. Without funding and resources, these communities have been unable to rebuild their homes and develop their communities, however, if they had access to reusable energy and sustainable water supplies their lives would be very different.

In the long run, we hope to provide communities with sustainable water supplies and reusable energy sources so that they can have electricity and water all year round without relying on the larger cities and communities. $26 brings clean energy to one beneficiary through a solar power source.
