Kissa, a 34 year old mother of four and farmer, works hard to provide the best for her children. She wants each of them to, “Get a good job—like doctor, lawyer, nurse, teacher and all go to college.” With the money she has made selling bananas and maize, so far, she has sent them all to school and has high hopes for their futures.
While her husband sells clothes, Kissa works to maintain the farm. When an animal is sick or she finds disease on crops the two of them and her CKW, Charles Chebet, work together to find a solution. The coffee plants used to be plagued by diseases on the berries, but since Kissa began using Actara (a chemical to protect berries from disease) she no longer has to worry.
With Charles’ help and knowledge Kissa has learned how to manage her coffee plants including, weeding, mulching, and she now uses using local manure from her goats and hens to fertilize her crops. This change has increased her coffee production immensely, she now grows six bags where she had previously grown two!
She has been working with Charles for three years and seen her operation grow, now she is able to employ 2-4 other members of her community.
Your help and support has given Kissa the opportunity to work with a CKW expanding her farming operation and sending her children to school.
