Community Knowledge Worker - Progress Report

By Laura Tarre | Development Officer

We've helped farmers in 15,000 Ugandan villages
We've helped farmers in 15,000 Ugandan villages

Greetings from Grameen Foundation! We are so grateful for your generous support and the change that you are bringing to villages across Uganda. Together we are empowering trusted local leaders – Community Knowledge Workers – to help their farmer neighbors and themselves through access to information on how to better care for their animals and livestock.

We are pleased to share our most recent successes with you from the past three months:

  • Almost 1,000 Community Knowledge Workers (CKWs) have helped more than 64,000 farmers, for a total of 139,000 farmers reached since the beginning of our project
  • Our CKWs have had more than one million interactions with their farmer neighbors, helping them with problems ranging from how to treat a diseased plant to where to get the best price for crops
  • One in three farmers has consulted their CKW more than once
  • Our CKWs have reached more than 15,000 villages!

Our CKWs go the extra mile – literally – to help their farmer neighbors. Recently, one of our CKWs rode her bicycle more than seven miles to purchase medicine for her neighbor, whose had lost all but one goat to disease. She was able to administer the drug in time to save the remaining goat, whom the farmer named “Survivor.” The farmer was so grateful that he gave the CKW one of his chickens!

Your support makes our work possible – thank you again for your generosity. Won’t you start the new year by donating whatever you can to help more poor farmers help themselves?

Best wishes for a wonderful 2013!
