Mission and Programs
New York Common Pantry (NYCP) reduces hunger while promoting dignity, health and self-sufficiency. Our mission serves the needs of the complete person with proven programs and innovative solutions, supported by data driven management. We work toward the reduction of hunger and food insecurity through an array of programs that function to establish long-term independence for those we serve. Our whole-person approach starts with food provision through the distribution of nutritious, fresh food through our Choice Pantry and hearty, balanced lunches through our Hot Meals program. Our Mobile Pantry brings the same nutritious, fresh grocery packages to partner sites throughout New York City. We provide supplemental food to seniors, ages 60 and older through NYCP’s Nourish program. We then go further to address the root causes of food insecurity with case management services provided by Help 365 and Help 365 Mobile, which assists Pantry participants in accessing resources, and Project Dignity, which connects homeless visitors to resources for housing, psychiatric services, and job training. Live Healthy! nutrition education teaches participants about the importance of a nutritionally sound diet and provides them with the skills to make informed choices about healthier food options. The NYCP service model recognizes that poverty restricts access to educational, career and social opportunities as well as financial resources. With that in mind, we encourage our Pantry members to be active participants, from choosing the contents of their grocery packages to meeting with case managers, and attending food preparation and nutrition classes.
NYCP programs are interrelated but distinct to support a diverse cohort of constituents, including: seniors on fixed incomes who are in need of nutrition security, the unhoused who are in need of a shower, laundry, haircut, and mail services, as well as housing assistance, and individuals and families who don’t live near our brick-and-mortar facilities and need to access services directly in the communities where they live. In FY23, NYCP programs had the following impact:
NYCP food programs help families stretch their budgets, reallocating resources to housing, clothing, health care, and education. As we serve more people than ever before, including many who have never accessed emergency food aid before, the team at NYCP remains committed to our guiding principles, providing respectful, individualized support.
A Year in Review
NYCP has had a year of tremendous growth in 2023 - we served over 100,000 individuals and provided more than 10 million meals to those in need. NYCP opened two new facilities in FY23, our Food Storage and Distribution Hub (The Hub) and our new service site for our Nourish program.
This year, NYCP’s holiday events saw our biggest turnout ever. Over the course of our 2023 Thanksgiving distribution NYCP’s Pantry locations distributed 7,890 Thanksgiving dinner packages - more than double over the previous year, and served Thanksgiving dinner to 449 individuals. During our holiday toy drive, NYCP gave out 1,176 gift cards and stocking stuffers, and provided 2,609 grocery packages to families in need during this holiday season.
NYCP continues our fight to reduce hunger in New York City every day, but the need for ongoing food assistance continues to grow - as we saw in FY23 with more than 600,000 visits from people seeking meals, social service support and stability. The increased demand that started with the COVID-19 pandemic has not abated in its’ aftermath - we anticipate that we will provide 10 million meals and serve 100,000 individuals in FY24.
As we continue to increase our reach while making our food programs operations more efficient and sustainable NYCP is grateful for the commitment of our volunteers, staff, and donors in the fight against hunger and poverty in New York City. Support from donors like you has helped NYCP manage the rise in food costs without compromising the quality of the food we serve.
