The vaginal environment is naturally acidic (pH 3.8 to 4.5) to prevent harmful bacterial growth. Scented soaps are often alkaline, which shifts this balance and creates an environment where pathogens can flourish. Fragrances and chemicals can kill beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus, which are essential for defending against infections. For most women, rinsing the external area (vulva) with clean, lukewarm water is the safest and most effective method.
Scented soaps contain synthetic fragrances, dyes, and alcohol. These chemicals act as irritants that strip away the natural moisture and protective oils of the vulvar skin. The vagina maintains a specific acidity (pH level) to kill "bad" bacteria. Scented soaps are typically alkaline, which neutralizes this acidity, essentially "opening the door" for infections to take hold. Many people use scented soaps to mask natural odors. However, because these soaps cause infections like Bacterial Vaginosis
By shifting community norms, such an initiative can significantly reduce the prevalence of preventable infections like Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. Many people use scented products due to social pressure to mask natural odors. Educational workshops, such as those organized by DYJEPREDHU, use theater and open discussions to normalize natural bodily functions and dispel the myth that the vagina is "dirty". The project encourages a "back-to-basics" approach, emphasizing that
By eliminating chemical irritants, there will be a significant decrease in recurring cases of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections, leading to better overall reproductive health. Since untreated vaginal infections are linked to preterm births and low birth weight, promoting healthy hygiene practices contributes to safer pregnancies and healthier babies. Women and girls will save money previously spent on expensive scented products and medical treatments for avoidable infections.
