Duke- UNC 2017 China Leadership Summit

Carolina China Network (CCN) at UNC Chapel Hill provides professors and with a network to connect with fellow students with strong academic and professional interests in China. CCN organizes and executes many educational and cultural programs throughout both semesters to bring students together to discuss contemporary issues, as well as gain exposure to China’s dynamic cultural framework. The pinnacle of its cultural and academic programming is the annual Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit (CLS).

CLS is an annual conference on US-China relations hosted by both Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. It is indisputably the South’s premier China conference, likened in quality and comprehensiveness to Harvard’s China Forum and Stanford’s FACES. UNC and Duke have decided on April 7-9, 2017 for the conference dates and both executive teams are in place.

Three-day conference hosting 100 delegates. This conference has traditional culinary experiences, cultural performances (showcasing groups from UNC and Duke), world-renowned industry experts and stimulating discussion of these presentations. The conference culminates with a case competition aimed to challenge delegates to develop and “implement” a strategy to solve a contemporary foreign policy or business issue at the core of conference discussions.

o Traditional delegate breakdown:

30-40 from UNC
10-20 from Duke
40-60 from out-of-state and abroad

Hosts 12+ speakers who are leading experts in US-China relations

o Former Ambassador to China during Chinese Embassy bombing in Belgrade; Founder & Executive Director of US-China Education Trust; President of DMG Motion Picture Group; Director of Kissinger Institute on China and the United States; etc.

UNC hosts Friday and Sunday events; lectures are open to the public and are generally followed by discussion to enhance learning opportunities.
Bridges the gap between the Asian Studies program faculty and interested student body members

o Conference exposes the student body to issues most pertinent to the “most important relationship in the 21^st century.”

Annual budget of $25,000:

o One half raised by UNC ($12,500), the other half by Duke. We are seeking $ 5,920 for 4 of our 11 speakers. We aim to have a variety of speakers, and some young professionals (like one social media, start-up expert last year would not have otherwise been able to attend the conference with their own funds.

Fantastic Turnout for 2015 China Leadership Summit

The Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit is an annual student-run conference organized by Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We invite leading experts to speak on topics of importance to Sino-US relations and create a platform for students from across the United States and China to exchange perspectives on these issues, connect with speakers, and network with one another.

This year, the conference focused on the theme "U.S. and China Grand Strategy in the Asia Pacific, Africa, and Beyond." When using the term "grand strategy", we are referring to the fundamental awareness and articulation of a state's foreign policy--what type of world it seeks to build and what resources it will use to operate in that world. Due to its rapidly growing economic power, China has extended its reach across the globe: from the mineral mines of Africa, to the oilfields in the Middle East, to the agriculture fields in Latin America, to the manufacturing centers of East Asia. China's deepening economic, diplomatic, and military engagement with countries in the Asia Pacific and Africa are of particular note in recent years. At CLS 2015, we sought to explore how the US and China are using both hard and soft power to assert their influence in these nations.

To kick off, we hosted speaker Aaron Friedberg from Princeton University's Center for International Security Studies, followed by a Chinese yo-yo performance and music from a guzheng player. The following day was packed quite full! Delegates participated in seminars with the director of Asian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, the former Secretary-General of Hong Kong Federation of Students, a South Asia & Middle East Fellow at PoliTact, the Staff Director of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, a professor of African Studies, and a China-North Korea relations expert. Next, students heard perspectives from the former ambassador to Ethiopia, the managing editor of online magazine ChinaFile, and finally, Dr. Deborah Brautigam, who is the leading expert on China-Africa relations. The conference culminated with students competing in a case competition involving different foreign policy issues facing China.
