Mercy Corps and our partners are working to provide water, sanitation and hygiene solutions and protect children's emotional well being following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Ya'an prefecture in Sichuan, on April 20th. The powerful quake caused extensive damage to homes, buildings, roads and water systems in the three counties of Lushan, Tianquan and Baoxing. The most recent estimates are that 2 million people have been displaced from their homes.
We will support the urgent needs of earthquake survivors in the most affected parts of Sichuan Province and other surrounding areas.
With an office in the quake zone and a strong history of responding to disasters in the area, including the 2008 earthquake in the same region, Mercy Corps are able to mobilize quickly and provide immediate relief to survivors. We have distributed hygiene kits, re-opened kindergartens and are focused on our signature child psychosocial programs called Comfort for Kids and Moving Forward. We are also focused on longer term recovery efforts.
Lifesaving emergency aid and assistance to earthquake survivors, leading to longer-term programming to support the economic livelihoods and recovery of families.
