The Fundacion Rafael Pombo (FRP) is a non-profit organization geared towards building a culture that supports children's rights in Colombia. The Children's Library and Reading Room facility contains over 3.685 books and annually serves over 11.874 children. Our 28 years of experience can attest to the need for spaces that target the ignored and overlooked needs of children in Colombia. Help our Children's Library and Reading Room stay open for another year!
The past fifty years of armed conflict have modelled a culture of violence, unrest and mistrust. Bogota receives the largest number of people displaced by the armed conflict, which increases the need for spaces geared to-wards child development through reading, creative educational workshops, or youth-oriented library facilities. In order to empower Colombian children to become agents of change, fully enacting their civil rights, we need to provide nurturing spaces filled with love and trust.
By providing children with age-appropriate leisure spaces, we give visibility to early childhood participation, the exercise of the citizenship rights of children, and artistic expressions. Our hope is to develop the like for reading in children, developing their imagination and giving them the tools to imagine new worlds and new realities that affect positive change in the country. Our Children's Library and Reading Room offers children the space to communicate effectively, create, and imagine.
By offering nurturing spaces where children are the main beneficiaries we encourage the unique and transformative experience of a child comprehending their significance as a human being. By providing a safe space of trust, honesty, respect, and visibility, we influence not only the child's life but also his environment and his family. We are fostering their ability to solve conflicts, live in harmony, and be responsible for themselves and the the society that surrounds them.
